How to Choose Your Gym

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR GYM

As a Personal Trainer, I have been in my fair share of gyms. Large / “big box” types, boutique style, apartment set ups; you name it. Since I spend so much time in these spaces, I find it very important to choose a gym that fuels motivation & matches each person’s goals.


SET YOUR HEALTH & FITNESS GOALS

First, let’s figure out why you are considering joining a gym in the first place. What are 3 goals you’d like to work towards?

BUILD MUSCLE

If your goal is to build muscle, I suggest checking out the free weight area. Are there ample benches / space for you to lift? Do you have a preference between dumbbells / kettlebells / barbells & if so, does the gym provide those items? Also note if there is a cable machine and assisted machines to allow for a variety of strength training options.

IMPROVE ENDURANCE

If your goal is to improve endurance, I suggest thinking about what type of movement you enjoy most. Do you like to swim? Look for a gym that has a nice pool. Do you prefer traditional cardio equipment? Make sure there are ample machines.

CREATE OVERALL HEALTHIER HABITS

If your goal is to take the first step to build healthier habits, I suggest thinking about how each gym makes you feel. Is the location close enough where you feel comfortable traveling there throughout the week? Do you feel intimidated entering the gym? Are add-ons like massage chairs, smoothie bar / cafe, sauna or tanning important to you? These extra items are a great way to incentivise a trip to the gym when you’re in the beginning stages of building a habit!

FIND LIKE MINDED / HEALTH MINDED PEOPLE

If your goal is to be surrounded by like minded people, I suggest finding a gym with community in mind. A space that offers a variety of classes is a great place to start! Not only are you crushing a workout, you’re doing it alongside a group of people who also have health in mind. If classes aren’t your thing, consider finding a membership option that allows guest access so you can bring a friend to the gym with you!


Overall, figuring out your why not only helps narrow down what aspects of a gym are the most important, but also gives you a specific direction to go once you do snag a membership!
